„In the 1970s, alongside her studies in sculpture, the artist, born in 1954, also completed a degree in graphic art in East Berlin.
At the latest with her move to the West, which led her to West Berlin in 1987, Ellen Mäder-Gutz develops an individual canon of forms. Leaving the traditional image of the human being behind, she embarks on a profound engagement with nature.
....with her imaginative transformation of plant structures, Mäder-Gutz takes up the tradition of the symbolic linking of nature and femininity. In this way, through drawing, an artistic figure emerges within which she circumscribes the „secret", that which essentially cannot be put into words.
...alongside these, almost life-sized sculptures reveal a strikingly spatial presence. Beyond the three-dimensional works, intense prints demonstrate her engagement with the phenomenon of space. Through the subtlest nuances of colour, the artist constructs spatial illusion on a two-dimensional surface.
Taken as a whole, the works of Ellen Mäder-Gutz display a broad spectrum of sensual qualities. In manifold ways and with great technical precision, she opens up, through sculpture, printmaking and drawing, impressive perspectives on plants and blossoms that repeatedly evoke associations of the feminine."
